Offline Downloads Download IPTV Movies and Episodes Offline on iPhone and iPad
Download IPTV movies and series episodes for offline viewing on iPhone and iPad with Stream Master: steps, storage sizes, cellular data and the limits.
By the Stream Master team · Published
To watch IPTV movies offline on an iPhone or iPad, add your provider’s playlist to Stream Master, upgrade to Pro, and download the movies or series episodes you want while you’re on Wi-Fi. Downloads cover movies and series episodes only, not live channels, and they’re a Pro feature on iPhone and iPad. They run in the background, can be paused and resumed, and the app asks before it uses cellular data. You manage them from Settings > Downloads.
The rest of this guide covers each step, how much storage to expect, how to keep cellular data under control, and what to check with your provider first.
What you can and can’t download
| Content | Offline download? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Movies | Yes (Pro, iPhone/iPad) | From your playlist’s Movies section |
| Series episodes | Yes (Pro, iPhone/iPad) | From your playlist’s Series section |
| Live TV channels | No | Use recording instead (Pro, iPhone/iPad) |
Movies and series episodes
Stream Master organises your playlist into Live TV, Movies and Series, using your provider’s categories. The titles in the Movies and Series sections are what you can save for offline viewing.
Live channels: record instead
Live channels aren’t part of downloads. If you want to keep a copy of something airing on a live channel, Stream Master Pro can record a live channel to an MP4 file on iPhone and iPad. Recordings are listed under Settings > Recording Settings, separate from downloads. Because you record a channel while it’s on air, you still need a connection at the time. There’s more on this in Multi-View and Recording Explained.
Apple TV
The Apple TV app doesn’t have downloads (or recording). Its Settings include a Storage entry, but that isn’t related to offline viewing. If you want to watch offline, download to your iPhone or iPad.
What you need before you start
- An iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or later.
- Your own playlist. Stream Master is a player. It doesn’t provide channels, movies or a subscription. You need an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login from a legal IPTV provider you subscribe to.
- Stream Master Pro. Offline downloads are part of Pro, along with unlimited playlists and favorites, recording, AirPlay, Chromecast, Multi-View, iCloud Sync and no ads. Plans are monthly, yearly or lifetime, and prices vary by country, so check the price shown in the app.
- Free storage on your device for the files.
- Your provider’s terms, which are worth checking (see below).
How to download IPTV movies and episodes, step by step
1. Add your playlist
Open the Playlists tab, tap +, then choose Link m3u or Xtream Login.
- Link m3u asks for a Playlist Title and Playlist URL.
- Xtream Login asks for a Playlist Title, Xtream Username, Xtream Password and Xtream Portal URL.
If your M3U link contains Xtream credentials (a get.php?username=… style link), Stream Master converts it to an Xtream playlist automatically. While loading, the app checks the connection, verifies your login and loads categories, then shows how many Live TV channels, movies and series you have, plus your account status and expiry date. For a fuller walkthrough, see How to Add and Manage IPTV Playlists.
2. Upgrade to Pro
Downloads need Pro. The free version is limited to one playlist and five favorites and doesn’t include downloads.
3. Connect to Wi-Fi
Movie files can be large, so start downloads on Wi-Fi. Make sure Low Data Mode is off for the network you’re using, because it restricts background network use in iOS. The exact settings are in the cellular and Low Data Mode section below.
4. Find the movie or episode and download it
Go to Movies or Series in your playlist, browse by category or use search to find the title, and start the download for that movie or episode. Repeat for anything else you want to take with you.
5. Let it run in the background
You don’t need to keep Stream Master on screen. Downloads continue in the background, and you can pause and resume them, which is useful if your Wi-Fi drops.
6. Decide about cellular data
If you’re not on Wi-Fi, Stream Master asks before using cellular data for a download. Say no if you’re on a limited plan or roaming, and resume on Wi-Fi later.
7. Check your downloads before you leave
Open Settings > Downloads to see and manage your downloads. Before a trip, it’s sensible to put the device in Airplane Mode and play a few seconds of each download, so you know it’s ready before you lose your connection.
How much storage do IPTV downloads need?
There’s no single answer, because the file size depends on the file your provider supplies: its resolution, codec, container (for example MKV or HLS) and original size. The figures below are rough guides from streaming services and estimates, not measurements of IPTV files.
Netflix’s published figures give a sense of scale: up to about 1 GB per hour for high SD, up to 3 GB per hour for HD and up to 7 GB per hour for 4K. Using those figures, a two-hour movie works out at roughly 2 GB in SD, 6 GB in HD and 14 GB in 4K, and a half-hour show at about 500 MB in SD, 1.5 GB in HD and 3.5 GB in 4K.
Estimates worked out from typical H.264 bitrates based on Apple’s HLS Authoring Specification come out lower, especially for SD:
| Approximate quality (bitrate) | Per hour | 45-minute episode | 2-hour movie |
|---|---|---|---|
| SD (about 1,100 kbps) | about 0.5 GB | about 0.37 GB | about 1 GB |
| 720p (about 3,000 kbps) | about 1.35 GB | about 1 GB | about 2.7 GB |
| 1080p (about 6,000 kbps) | about 2.7 GB | about 2 GB | about 5.4 GB |
Taken together, that gives a range rather than one number: roughly 1 to 2 GB for a two-hour SD movie and about 3 to 6 GB for an HD one, with 4K much larger. Leave plenty of headroom, and if you’re downloading a whole season, add up the episodes before you start.
How to check free storage on iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage).
- Look at the recommendations and the list of apps, which shows how much space each one uses.
- Tap an app’s name for more detail. Apple notes that cached and temporary data might not be counted.
If you see a “Storage Almost Full” alert, Apple suggests checking the recommendations on that screen or removing content such as videos and apps you no longer need. You can also check storage from a computer using the Finder, the Apple Devices app or iTunes.
One caution: iOS offers to offload an app, which frees the app’s space while keeping its documents and data. Don’t rely on offloading Stream Master as a way to keep your downloads, and don’t delete the app if you want to keep them. Free space by removing other things instead. For more on the app’s own settings, see Stream Master Settings: Optimize Performance and Manage Storage.
Cellular data, Low Data Mode and roaming
These iOS settings affect whether and how downloads use your connection:
- Low Data Mode on Wi-Fi: Settings > Wi-Fi > Info button next to the network > Low Data Mode. This is set per network, so a hotel network or tethered hotspot can have it on even if your home Wi-Fi doesn’t.
- Low Data Mode on cellular: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Low Data Mode (on 5G: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode > Low Data Mode).
- Per-app cellular access: In Settings > Cellular you can turn cellular data off for individual apps, and those apps then use Wi-Fi only. If it’s off for Stream Master, saying yes to the app’s cellular prompt will likely not get a download going, so turn it back on in iOS Settings if you want downloads over cellular.
- Data Roaming: Abroad, Apple recommends turning off Data Roaming to avoid roaming charges: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming. This is a good reason to finish your downloads before you travel.
In general, Apple says Low Data Mode stops apps using network data when you’re not actively using them, turns off Background App Refresh and automatic downloads, and lowers streaming quality, though apps handle it in different ways. Turning it off for the network you’re downloading on is the safe choice.
In the UK, India and some other regions, iOS says Mobile Data instead of Cellular, and Low Data Mode options can vary by carrier.
Does your IPTV provider allow downloads?
Check before you rely on it. Read your provider’s terms of service or ask their support team whether offline viewing is allowed on your plan. Stream Master only plays what your provider gives you, so the provider’s rules apply.
Quick checklist before a trip
- Confirm your provider’s terms allow downloading.
- Check free space in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Download on Wi-Fi with Low Data Mode off for that network.
- Start downloads well before you leave, so large files have time to finish.
- Check everything in Settings > Downloads and test-play each file in Airplane Mode.
- Turn off Data Roaming if you’re travelling abroad.
- Charge your device.
You can read more about how the feature fits into the app on the Offline Downloads page.
