IPTV players How to Choose an IPTV Player for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV (2026)

A 2026 checklist for choosing an IPTV player on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV: playlist types, TV guide, catch-up, casting, recording and free vs paid tiers.

By the Stream Master team · Published

The best IPTV player for iPhone and Apple TV is the one that passes three tests. It accepts the login your provider gave you. It can use the TV guide your provider supplies. And it offers the features you need on the device you actually watch on.

There is no universal winner, so this guide turns each feature into a question to ask before you install or pay. Stream Master is the worked example throughout, limits included, so you can see what a complete answer looks like. Nothing here compares it with other apps.

First: a player is not a provider

An IPTV player is a video player. It contains no channels, films or series. You bring a playlist or login from a provider you subscribe to, and the player organises and plays it. Stream Master works this way. It plays M3U playlists and Xtream Codes logins you already have, and it does not sell, include or recommend any channels or subscriptions.

This distinction matters legally.

  • App Store rules. Apple’s App Review Guidelines tell developers not to use protected third-party material without permission (5.2.1). They also say apps should not facilitate illegal file sharing or let users save or download media from third-party sources without permission (5.2.3). Apple does reject apps under that rule.
  • EU case law. In the Filmspeler case (C-527/15, April 2017), the Court of Justice of the EU looked at a seller of media players that came pre-loaded with add-ons linking to unlicensed sources. It ruled that selling them counted as a “communication to the public”. The pre-installed links decided the case, not the player itself. The court also said temporary copies made while streaming from such a device are not covered by the copyright exception, so the ruling concerns viewers as well as sellers.
  • Treatment varies by country. As reported in April 2022, the Spanish league LaLiga sent the European Commission a report naming 85 IPTV players as illegal tools, even though most carried no content. Check the rules where you live.

The practical takeaway: pick a legal provider first, then a player. Use recording and download features only on streams from your own subscription, within your provider’s terms.

1. Does it accept your provider’s playlist type?

Stream Master accepts two kinds of login from a provider: an M3U link (a single URL) or an Xtream Codes login (username, password and portal URL). Check which one your provider gave you and whether the player you are considering takes it.

Stream Master: in the Playlists tab, tap + and choose Link m3u or Xtream Login. The same two options appear on Apple TV. If your M3U link actually contains Xtream credentials (a get.php?username=... style URL), the app converts it to an Xtream playlist automatically.

While it loads, the app checks the connection and verifies your credentials. It then shows how many Live TV channels, Movies and Series it found, plus your account status and expiry date, which is a quick way to confirm your subscription is active.

What it does not do: Stalker Portal, MAG or MAC-address logins, or loading playlists from a file or QR code. If your provider only offers those, this is not your player. For more on the login format, see What is Xtream Codes?

2. Where does the TV guide come from?

A player can only show a guide if it has guide data, so ask where that data comes from before you assume you will get one.

Stream Master takes the guide from your Xtream Codes provider. Plain M3U playlists do not get a guide, and the app cannot load a separate XMLTV or EPG URL. If you rely on a separate guide file paired with an M3U link, that is a firm limit.

With an Xtream playlist, you get:

  • the current and next program in the player, plus a schedule sheet
  • an EPG grid with a 24-hour timeline, scrolled to now, with the live program highlighted (open a Live TV category and tap the grid button in the toolbar)
  • a bell on future programs to set a reminder, which fires at start time
  • an Upcoming Reminders section on Home on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV

Channels your provider has no data for show “No Information”. Our EPG guide walks through the grid in detail.

3. Does it offer catch-up on the devices you use?

Catch-up has two conditions. Your provider has to archive the channels you care about, because a player can only replay what the provider has stored. And the player has to support catch-up on the device you watch on.

In Stream Master, catch-up works on iPhone and iPad, with Xtream playlists, on channels the provider archives. In the EPG grid, replayable past programs have a light-green background and a green rewind icon. Tap one to watch it from the start. Programs outside the archive window simply play live, with no error message. Catch-up is not available on Apple TV, and the player’s schedule sheet does not offer it.

4. Will it play the formats your provider sends?

Apple’s own streaming format is HLS (.m3u8). Apple’s authoring specification lists H.264, HEVC, Dolby Vision and AV1 as the video codecs for HLS, and says H.264 video must be delivered in fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport stream segments. Some IPTV streams are HLS, and some arrive as raw MPEG-TS, MKV or other formats that Apple’s player is not built for. Apple devices do not play MKV natively, and because MKV is a container, whether a file plays also depends on the codecs inside it.

Stream Master plays HLS, MPEG-TS, MKV, AVI, FLV, WMV and WebM. It chooses between Apple’s player and a VLC-based engine automatically.

The trade-off shows up in Picture-in-Picture. PiP is free, but it only works on streams that use Apple’s player (HLS and most movies). It is not available for MKV, raw TS and similar streams. If PiP matters to you, test it on the channels you watch most.

If a channel fails, an error card offers Retry, an alternative quality of the same channel when your playlist has one, or the next channel.

5. How will you get it onto the TV?

There are two routes: a native Apple TV app, or casting from your phone. They behave differently, so decide which you will use most.

Native Apple TV app. Stream Master runs on Apple TV (tvOS 18.5 or later) with the same tabs and playlist options as the iPhone. You get favorites, reminders, Multi-View, parental control and iCloud Sync, with no ads.

Casting from iPhone or iPad (Pro). The AirPlay button opens the system device picker so you can choose an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV. Chromecast works like this:

  1. Tap the Cast button in the player and pick a Chromecast or Google Cast device.
  2. The current stream loads on the TV, and playback continues on the phone.
  3. Changing channel on the phone does not change the TV. A Play on TV button appears so you decide when to send the new channel.
  4. If the TV cannot play the stream, a “Connection Failed” message appears.

The casting guide covers both methods.

6. Do you need Multi-View, recording or downloads?

Device support differs between these three features, so match them to where you watch.

Multi-View shows up to 4 streams at once: one fills the screen, two sit side by side, and three or four use a 2x2 grid. Only one tile plays sound at a time. On iPhone and iPad it needs Pro; tap a tile to give it the sound (it gets a green border). On Apple TV no Pro is needed; open it with “Open MultiView” from a channel’s detail, and the sound follows whichever tile is focused.

Recording (Pro, iPhone and iPad) uses the red REC button in the player. It records one stream at a time, from live channels or from your current position in a movie. Each recording is saved as an MP4 in the app, with an offer to save a copy to Photos.

Offline downloads (Pro, iPhone and iPad) cover movies and series episodes, not live channels. Wi-Fi Only is on by default, and you can set 1 to 5 concurrent downloads.

Of these three, only Multi-View is on Apple TV. If you mainly watch on the TV and want to record, plan to do it from an iPhone or iPad.

7. Who else watches?

If children use the device, look for category locking rather than a single on/off switch.

Stream Master’s parental control is free. It uses a 4-digit PIN, and you lock categories per playlist. Locked categories are blurred and ask for the PIN; an unlock lasts until the app is closed. Categories whose names contain adult keywords lock automatically when parental control is on. It is available on Apple TV too. See Parental Controls.

8. Do you use more than one Apple device?

Stream Master’s iCloud Sync (Pro) keeps playlists, favorites and watch history in sync across iPhone, iPad and Apple TV signed in to the same Apple ID.

9. What is free, and what needs a subscription?

Know exactly where the paywall sits before you build habits around a feature.

  • Stream Master Free: 1 playlist, up to 5 favorites, Picture-in-Picture, the TV guide, catch-up, reminders and parental control. Free users on iPhone and iPad see ads.
  • Stream Master Pro: unlimited playlists and favorites, AirPlay, Chromecast, recording, offline downloads, Multi-View on iPhone and iPad, video picture settings, iCloud Sync and Watch Stats, with no ads.

Pro comes as a monthly, yearly or lifetime plan. Prices vary by country, so check the App Store in your region. Free users still see the Pro buttons in the player, but tapping one opens the upgrade screen, so it is easy to see what you would get. Read the App Store listing’s privacy section yourself as well; it is worth checking for any app you install.

How to test before you pay

  1. Confirm your devices meet the requirements: iOS 16 or later, tvOS 18.5 or later.
  2. Install the app and add your provider’s M3U link or Xtream login on the free tier.
  3. Check the loading screen: the Live TV, Movies and Series counts and the expiry date should match your subscription.
  4. Open a Live TV category and switch to the grid. If it says “No Information” everywhere, your playlist has no guide data.
  5. Try PiP on a few channels to see which ones support it.
  6. Only then decide whether Pro features like casting, recording or iCloud Sync are worth it for how you watch.

If Stream Master passes your checklist, download it from the App Store and try it with your own provider’s playlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A player only plays playlists or logins you get from a provider you subscribe to. Stream Master contains no channels and does not sell or recommend subscriptions.

Will I get a TV guide with a plain M3U link in Stream Master?

No. Stream Master takes the guide from Xtream Codes providers, and it cannot load a separate XMLTV or EPG URL. Plain M3U playlists play, but without a guide.

Can I record or use catch-up on Apple TV with Stream Master?

No. Recording, offline downloads and catch-up are iPhone and iPad features. The Apple TV app has Multi-View, favorites, reminders, parental control and iCloud Sync.

Why doesn't Picture-in-Picture work on some channels?

In Stream Master, PiP works on streams that use Apple's player, such as HLS and most movies. It is not available for MKV, raw TS and similar streams.

What do I get without paying for Stream Master Pro?

The free tier gives you 1 playlist, up to 5 favorites, Picture-in-Picture, the TV guide, catch-up, reminders and parental control, with ads on iPhone and iPad. Pro adds unlimited playlists, casting, recording, downloads, Multi-View on iPhone and iPad and iCloud Sync, and removes ads.
